چکیده

The equilibrium rotation of tidally evolved “Earth-like” extra-solar planets is often assumed to be synchronous with their orbital mean motion. The same assumption persisted for Mercury and Venus until radar observations revealed their true spin rates. As many of these planets follow eccentric orbits and are believed to host dense atmospheres, we expect the equilibrium rotation to differ from the synchronous motion. Here we provide a general description of the allowed final equilibrium rotation states of these planets, and apply this to already discovered cases in which the mass is lower than 12 M⊕. At low obliquity and moderate eccentricity, it is shown that there are at most four distinct equilibrium possibilities, one of which can be retrograde. Because most presently known “Earth-like” planets present eccentric orbits, their equilibrium rotation is unlikely to be synchronous.

1 FRESIP : A Mission to Determine the Character and Frequency of Extra - Solar Planets Around Solar - like Stars

FRESIP (FRequency of Earth-Sized Inner Planets) is a mission designed to detect and characterize Earth-size planets around solar-like stars. The sizes of the planets are determined from the decrease in light from a star that occurs during planetary transits and the orbital period is determined from the repeatability of the transits. Measurements of these parameters can be compared to theories t...

Exoplanets: the quest for Earth twins.

Today, more than 400 extra-solar planets have been discovered. They provide strong constraints on the structure and formation mechanisms of planetary systems. Despite this huge amount of data, we still have little information concerning the constraints for extra-terrestrial life, i.e. the frequency of Earth twins in the habitable zone and the distribution of their orbital eccentricities. On the...

Estimating the masses of extra-solar planets

All extra-solar planet masses that have been derived spectroscopically are lower limits since the inclination of the orbit to our line-of-sight is unknown except for transiting systems. In theory, however, it is possible to determine the inclination angle, i, between the rotation axis of a star and an observer’s line-of-sight from measurements of the projected equatorial velocity (v sin i), the...

Exponential law as a more compatible model to describe orbits of planetary systems

According to the Titus-Bode law, orbits of planets in the solar system obey a geometric progression. Many investigations have been launched to improve this law. In this paper, we apply square and exponential models to planets of solar system, moons of planets, and some extra solar systems, and compare them with each other.

Considerations for the habitable zone of super - Earth planets in Gliese 581

Aims. We assess the possibility that planets Gliese 581 c and d are within the habitable zone. Methods. In analogy with our solar system, we use an empirical definition of the habitable zone. We include assumptions such as planetary climates, and atmospheric circulation on gravitationally locked synchronous rotation. Results. Based on the different scenarios, we argue that both planets in Glies...
